BeyondSpring Inc. a global biopharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative cancer therapies, announced today that the first patient has been dosed in a Phase 2 investigator-initiated trial with Pembrolizumab, Plinabulin, and Etoposide/Platinum for first-line Extensive-Stage Small-Cell Lung Cancer (ES-SCLC).
Small-cell lung cancer is a particularly aggressive form of lung cancer that accounts for approximately 15% of all lung cancer cases. Extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer refers to cases where the cancer has spread beyond the lung to other parts of the body. Unfortunately, the prognosis for patients with ES-SCLC is poor, with limited treatment options available.
BeyondSpring’s lead asset, Plinabulin, is a novel immunotherapy agent that has shown promising results in preclinical and clinical studies. It works by modulating the immune system to fight cancer cells more effectively. Plinabulin has been studied in various cancer types, including non-small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, and bladder cancer, and has demonstrated both anti-tumor activity and an ability to enhance the effectiveness of other cancer therapies.
In this Phase 2 investigator-initiated trial, Plinabulin will be combined with Pembrolizumab, a widely used anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody, and Etoposide/Platinum chemotherapy. The goal is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this combination as a potential first-line treatment option for patients with ES-SCLC.
The study, registered under the identifier NCT05745350, will enroll patients who have received no prior treatment for their ES-SCLC. The primary endpoints of the trial include overall response rate, progression-free survival, and overall survival. Additionally, the study will assess safety and tolerability and explore potential biomarkers that may predict response to treatment.
The initiation of this Phase 2 trial is a significant milestone for BeyondSpring, as it represents the potential for a new treatment option for patients with ES-SCLC. If successful, the combination of Plinabulin, Pembrolizumab, and Etoposide/Platinum could provide patients with improved outcomes and better quality of life.
Dr. Lan Huang, Co-Founder and CEO of BeyondSpring, expressed excitement about the trial, stating, We are pleased to initiate this Phase 2 investigator-initiated trial with our lead asset Plinabulin in combination with Pembrolizumab and chemotherapy for the treatment of ES-SCLC. This study represents an important step forward in our efforts to develop innovative and effective therapies for patients with lung cancer.
The unique mechanism of action of Plinabulin, which combines immunomodulatory and vascular disruption properties, makes it a promising candidate for combination therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors like Pembrolizumab. By enhancing the immune system’s response to cancer cells and disrupting tumor vasculature, Plinabulin has the potential to improve treatment outcomes for patients with ES-SCLC.
In conclusion, the initiation of the Phase 2 trial with Pembrolizumab, Plinabulin, and Etoposide/Platinum in first-line ES-SCLC represents a significant development in the field of lung cancer treatment. This trial has the potential to provide a new treatment option for patients with ES-SCLC, a patient population with limited therapeutic options and poor prognosis.
