Ciaran Murray, aged 63, serves as Chair and Director of ICON plc. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce from University College Dublin in 1982 and qualified as a chartered accountant with PwC. Murray has held executive roles in the consumer goods and technology sectors globally. He has been Chair since March 2017, previously serving as CEO from 2011 to 2017 and CFO from 2005 to 2011. He has received recognition for leadership in the contract research organization (CRO) industry and holds honorary degrees and awards.
Barry Balfe, aged 47, is Chief Executive Officer and Director of ICON plc. He was appointed CEO in October 2025 and joined the Board in September 2025. Prior to becoming CEO, Balfe was Chief Operating Officer from January 2025 and President of ICON Pharma Development Solutions. He has over 20 years of experience at ICON in various leadership roles. Balfe holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Dublin City University and Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Toulouse, studied pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacovigilance at the University of London, and completed the Stanford Executive Program in 2023.
Nigel Clerkin, aged 52, is Chief Financial Officer of ICON plc, appointed in October 2024. He began his career at KPMG Dublin and held roles at Elan Corporation, including Group CFO. Clerkin also served as CFO at ConvaTec, UDG Healthcare, and LetsGetChecked. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Accounting from Queen’s University Belfast and is a qualified chartered accountant.
