The company provides insurance services primarily to national accounts through large deductible programs and loss-sensitive or retrospectively rated programs within the middle and large business segments. It also offers captive business solutions featuring adjustable premiums and potential tax advantages. The middle and large business segment serves exporters and U.S. companies with a physical presence overseas. Both small business and middle and large business lines are subject to rate regulation influenced by loss cost trends. The global specialty segment delivers customized insurance products, including property, general liability, marine, professional liability, bond, and excess and surplus lines coverage for companies of all sizes. It operates internationally as the sole corporate member of Lloyd's Syndicate 1221 and provides assumed reinsurance primarily in Europe and the Americas. Marketing and distribution are conducted through regional offices, branches, and sales and service centers mainly located in the U.S. and the U.K. Channels include independent retail agents, brokers, wholesale agents, specialty insurance and reinsurance brokers, and direct-to-consumer sales. The company also offers insurance products to customers of payroll service providers through relationships with major national payroll companies in the U.S. and to members of affinity organizations. The company holds exclusive underwriting rights in the Lloyd's of London market through Lloyd's Syndicate 1221. The U.S. market is experiencing consolidation among independent agents, brokers, and wholesalers, which may increase the proportion of written premium by larger companies.
