Steel Dynamics Inc's Comment on Supply Chain

The company's electric arc furnace (EAF) steel operations primarily use recycled ferrous scrap metals, including home scrap, industrial scrap, obsolete scrap, and demolition scrap, which constitute over 80% of the metallic melt mix. Additional iron units such as pig iron, direct reduced iron (DRI), hot briquetted iron (HBI), and internally sourced liquid pig iron account for approximately 13-15% of the metallic materials consumed in recent years. In aluminum operations, raw aluminum (P1020) and recycled aluminum scrap derived from home scrap, industrial scrap, and recycled materials from trucks, automobiles, and used food and beverage containers are utilized. The recycled content varies by product, with food and beverage products typically containing 85% or more recycled material. Scrap prices are influenced by domestic production levels, exports, and obsolete scrap recycling, and they correlate with global pig iron pricing. Electricity represents a significant input for steel production, comprising about 4% of production costs, with fixed-price electricity contracts established for certain divisions.
