NBB serves customers primarily in southwest, western, and central Virginia, including rural areas with several major state-supported universities such as Virginia Tech, Radford University, University of Virginia, James Madison University, Virginia Military Institute, Washington and Lee University, Liberty University, and Mary Baldwin University. The market area has a diverse economic base encompassing manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, healthcare, retail, and service industries. Significant manufacturing employers include Celanese Acetate in Giles County and Volvo Heavy Trucks in Pulaski County. Additional economic centers include Tazewell County, known for coal mining and agriculture; Montgomery County; Bluefield in Tazewell County; Abingdon in Washington County; and the cities of Roanoke, Charlottesville, Waynesboro, Lynchburg, and Staunton, which function as regional retail centers and provide basic healthcare facilities. National Bankshares Financial Services, Inc. (NBFS), a wholly owned subsidiary of NBI, offers non-deposit investment and insurance products to the public, collaborating with Osaic, Inc. for investment services and Bearing Insurance Group, LLC for insurance products.
