The company operates globally with manufacturing facilities in North America, South America, Australasia, and Europe. It has three primary business segments: Railroad and Utility Products and Services (RUPS), Performance Chemicals (PC), and Carbon Materials and Chemicals (CMC). The RUPS segment sells pressure-treated railroad ties to the railroad industry in the United States and Canada, treated utility poles to utility markets in the United States and Australia, untreated wood products, rail joint bars to railroad markets, and inspection services to utility markets. Its main end markets include the North American railroad industry, which installs approximately 450 million wood crossties, and the U.S. and Australian utility industries that use wooden distribution and transmission poles. The PC segment develops, manufactures, and markets wood preservation chemicals and wood treatment technologies for residential, industrial, and agricultural lumber applications. The CMC segment supplies creosote to the North American railroad industry and processes coal tar into various products used in wood treatment. The company’s operations are vertically integrated, with internal sales of creosote and chemicals between segments. The RUPS segment operates 18 wood treating plants and one rail joint bar manufacturing facility across the United States, Canada, and Australia, located near timber suppliers to serve customers efficiently.
