Duke Energy's Comment on Sales, Marketing and Customers

Duke Energy operates in the Southeast and Midwest regions of the United States, serving an area of approximately 90,000 square miles across six states with an estimated population of 27 million. The company sells electricity wholesale to municipalities, electric cooperative utilities, and other load-serving entities. Retail electricity sales are divided among residential, commercial, and industrial customers, with residential customers accounting for 27% to 51% of sales depending on the subsidiary, commercial customers representing 22% to 40%, and industrial customers comprising 8% to 28%. Retail customer growth is anticipated due to increases in the residential sector and strength in commercial demand, including data center usage. Industrial sales have declined due to manufacturing plant closures and high interest rates. Seasonal weather variations affect sales, with peak demand occurring in summer and winter. Duke Energy employs decoupling rates and rate design mechanisms to mitigate the effects of declining residential usage and weather variability. The company has engaged in investment agreements with Brookfield Super-Core Infrastructure Partners and has sold ownership interests in DATC Path 15 Transmission LLC and Pioneer.
