Business Description

Duke Energy Corporation is a prominent energy company in the Americas, with its operations extending across various sectors, including electric and natural gas transmission, field services, merchant power generation, and international energy assets. The company comprises several distinct business units, which are regularly reviewed by its chief operating decision maker for resource allocation and performance evaluation.

Business Units:

1. Franchised Electric
Duke Energy’s Franchised Electric division is responsible for generating, transmitting, distributing, and selling electricity. This segment operates primarily through Duke Power, serving approximately2 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers across central and western North Carolina and western South Carolina. The service area spans approximately 22,000 square miles, and the electricity distribution network includes over 92,000 miles of distribution lines and a 13,000-mile transmission system. Additionally, the division sells electricity to municipalities and public and private utilities, as well as agreements with certain cooperative customers for power from the Catawba Nuclear Station.

Natural Gas Transmission
This segment oversees the transportation and storage of natural gas across various regions, including the East Coast and Southern United States, the Pacific Northwest, and Canada. It provides retail natural gas services in Ontario and offers gas transportation and processing in Western Canada. Duke Energy Gas Transmission Corporation primarily manages these operations.

Field Services
Field Services focuses on the natural gas supply chain, which includes gathering, processing, transporting, trading, and storing natural gas and NGLs (Natural Gas Liquids). Conducted primarily through DEFS (Duke Energy Field Services), of which Duke Energy holds a 70% stake, this unit operates an extensive network of approximately 58,000 miles of natural gas gathering systems with over 34,000 active receipt points, sourcing gas from a vast array of production wells.

Duke Energy North America (DENA)
DENA manages merchant power generation facilities and engages in commodity trading related to electric power and natural gas. Its operations span the U.S. and Canada. DENA operates through Duke Energy North America and DETM, the latter being a partnership with Exxon Mobil Corporation.

International Energy
This division develops, operates, and manages power generation facilities and engages in sales and marketing of electric power and natural gas outside the U.S. and Canada, particularly focusing on opportunities in Latin America through DEI.

Other Operations
The segment known as Other Operations comprises various businesses, servicing different energy-related sectors, which are primarily managed through subsidiaries such as Crescent, DukeNet, DCP, DEM, D/FD, and EDS.

Competitive Landscape
Duke Energys Field Services competes with major integrated oil companies, national and local gas gatherers, brokers, and distributors, focusing on reliability, efficiency, pricing, and transportation availability. DENA faces competition from various electric power generation firms, financial institutions, and gas marketers, where price and service reliability are critical. In the International Energy sector, competition arises from government-owned and privately-owned generating entities, with pricing and reliability being the dominant factors influencing market dynamics. The Other Operations segment encounters competition from companies providing engineering, construction, and maintenance services.

Overall, Duke Energy Corporation remains a key player in the energy sector, actively managing a diverse portfolio of segments that continually adapt to market conditions and competitive challenges.
