American Battery Technology's Comment on Supply Chain

The lithium-ion battery supply chain includes suppliers that manufacture cell components such as cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, and separators. Global refining capacity and cell manufacturing are predominantly located outside the United States, mainly in Asia, with China accounting for over 70% of global cell manufacturing capacity. Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) capacity is distributed worldwide. Investment has been higher in cell manufacturing and OEMs compared to battery material suppliers and chemical refining capacity, leading to supply chain imbalances, particularly in the U.S., where less than 1% of global battery materials are sourced domestically. The supply of critical minerals is primarily from primary production, supplemented by some secondary recycling. Primary lithium is extracted from lithium-rich brines, hard rock deposits, and lithium-bearing claystone resources. Lithium brine deposits occur in salt flats such as those in South America, geothermal deposits like the Salton Sea in California, and oil fields. Hard rock lithium sources include spodumene pegmatite deposits found in Western Australia.
