Business Description
Adamas Pharmaceuticals is a specialty pharmaceutical company, based in Emeryville, California, that focuses on developing and commercializing drugs for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and dementia-related psychosis. The company was founded in 2000 by Gregory Went, Ph.D., a former biotechnology executive, and John Lloyd, a former chief medical officer of Clarity Medical Systems. The company's name "Adamas" comes from the Greek word that means "unbreakable", "unconquerable" or "diamond".
Adamas's main product is GOCOVRI (amantadine) extended-release capsules, the first and only FDA-approved medication specifically indicated for the treatment of dyskinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease receiving levodopa-based therapy, with or without concomitant dopaminergic medications. Dyskinesia is a common side effect of long-term treatment with levodopa, which causes involuntary and abnormal movement. GOCOVRI works by gradually releasing amantadine throughout the day, which reduces dyskinesia by modulating NMDA receptors in the brain. The drug was approved by the FDA in August 2017 and launched in January 2018.
Besides GOCOVRI, Adamas Pharmaceuticals has several other products in its pipeline. ADS-4101 is a modified-release version of amantadine that is being developed for the treatment of multiple sclerosis-related walking impairment. The drug is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials. In addition, the company is developing ADS-5102, an extended-release version of memantine, a drug used to treat dementia-related psychosis. The drug is currently in Phase 2 clinical trials.
Adamas Pharmaceuticals is also collaborating with several pharmaceutical companies to develop new drugs. The company has a partnership with Otsuka Pharmaceutical to develop a new drug candidate for the treatment of major depressive disorder, and a collaboration with Janssen Pharmaceuticals to develop a new drug candidate for the treatment of epilepsy. Overall, Adamas Pharmaceuticals is a promising specialty pharmaceutical company that has successfully developed and commercialized a novel drug for the treatment of dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease and has a strong pipeline of products for other neurological and psychiatric disorders.
