Blue Bird operates in the school bus market, producing electric and diesel-powered buses primarily for student transportation. In fiscal 2024, the company delivered its 2,000th electric school bus and is expanding its electric vehicle production capacity. Blue Bird collaborates with Cummins on diesel engines, which remain the primary power source for most school buses sold. The company is implementing safety upgrades such as three-point seat belts for all student passengers and the 4Front steering wheel air bag for drivers, developed in partnership with IMMI. Additional safety enhancements include high-intensity LED lighting, cameras, lighted stop arms and signs, strobe lights, and collision mitigation systems. Manufacturing developments include a robotic paint facility and a new Electric Vehicle Build-up Center to support increasing electric bus demand. Blue Bird also received an $80 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to convert a former diesel motorhome manufacturing site into a facility for producing buses with various powertrains, including electric and low-emission vehicles.
