CEMIG is primarily engaged in the production and distribution of electricity, as well as energy transmission and commercialization. It operates in 22 Brazilian states, including the most populated ones, such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The company also has international operations in Chile, where it owns and operates two hydroelectric power plants.
In terms of generation, CEMIG has a diversified energy mix, which includes hydroelectric, thermal, wind, and solar power plants. Its hydroelectric plants have a total installed capacity of 4,400 MW, accounting for the majority of the company's energy production. CEMIG also operates several thermal power plants, with a combined installed capacity of 1,600 MW, that use natural gas and other fuels.

In recent years, CEMIG has faced several challenges, particularly related to its financial performance. The company reported a net loss of BRL2 billion in 2019, which was attributed to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the increasing competition in the Brazilian energy market. However, CEMIG remains a key player in the Brazilian energy sector, and the company is committed to further enhancing its operations and expanding its international presence.
